VACICE - OUR STORY

Blog
08.01.2024

We are sleeping well today.

We don't wake up to blanket cold dumped babies at night. They are getting better quality and deeper sleep, they are warm and we are not worried about them catching a cold.

It hasn't always been that way, and of course, we've had tough nights and rough mornings too.

When our first daughter was born, we had no experience with baby care, we hadn't been taught anything, we hadn't been given any "well-meaning advice" (sometimes thankfully).

This sweet ignorance of ours and the immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth was a great start to contact parenting.

We slept together in bed, which made nighttime care much easier for me. I cuddled her and smelled her hair all night under the shared blanket. As she got older, she started to crawl, and so came the bed-walking phase of the night.

I'm sure you know it too. The baby rolls out from under the covers, sleeps...you sleep too..but not for long. At some unknown to you time (because you are still trying to sleep soundly) he starts to purr, wriggle, and crying ensues. You put him to sleep, but in a moment there it is again. The baby rolls over again, kicks the man in the head, he wakes up, shifts the baby, and thus wakes him up because he hasn't had time to fall asleep stiffly after the previous wake-up. And you're back in the merry-go-round: breastfeed, soothe, put to sleep. After a few of these wake-ups, I felt like I'd run a marathon in the morning.

It took me a long time to figure out that her perpetual purring wasn't just about tooth growth, hunger, or sleep cycles. But it may simply stem from the fact that she is simply COLD.

I did a lot of research and asked more experienced parents. Great, they say sleep sacks. Hooray! I ordered one, bought another, borrowed one, inherited one..different sizes and thicknesses.

The first night mostly went well, the next she was kicking and crying until I unzipped the bag and freed her legs.

I didn't understand what I was doing wrong... After all, it works for others. My maternal competence was declining significantly.

The turning point came when I started to cut, steam, quilt and sew mercilessly for the sake of better sleep. I dusted off my sewing machine and quilted a ready-made bag bought for a few euros at the bazaar. I added patches to the legs. The very evening the test took place, the test of truth...

..and you know what??? It worked... my daughter accepted the bag with leg holes and even slept peacefully, she didn't kick, didn't purr.

But it was just the beginning, there was still room for improvement. Next came the choice of high quality natural materials with safe quality certificates for the smallest babies. And endless tweaking of the cut with an experienced seamstress.

The result was a sleeping bag with legs that was wide enough, that didn't restrict my daughter's movement, she could turn around, curl her legs under her, or naturally put them in a flexion-abduction position, important for the proper development of the hip joints.

We used only natural materials for the prototypes, always in combination with merino.

Do you know what's great about merino?

It doesn't scratch, it's stretchy, soft and ideal even for atopic eczema sufferers, it works as a thermoregulator, it warms in winter and wicks moisture away from the skin in summer, it keeps the baby warm even when he sweats or splashes, it repels odours, so it's very easy to take care of. Just air it out. It's breathable and baby's skin can breathe.

And that's how VACICE was born.

We manufacture locally - whether it's knitting mills, fabric manufacturers, sewing workshops, printing patterns on fabric. We're trying to reduce our carbon footprint and support local small businesses.

We sew with natural materials free of harmful chemicals, safe for our children and the environment.

We love design. We also want to make your daily parenting routine more enjoyable.

The quality craftsmanship and growing pattern makes this product destined to be used by multiple children for a long time. We are devotees of slow fashion and zero waste. We are recalling all leftover fabrics and plan to use them in the creation of new products.

Today, it's been a few months since we've been on the market. We have attended trade fairs, launched an e-shop, got positive feedback from our customers, convinced even the totally die-hard rejecters of classic sleeping bags.

We are extremely happy that what helped us, helps you too:) From a bold idea came a project, a brand, an eshop, a small family business...

a dream come true.
