How to Ensure Your Baby Feels Comfortable and Safe at Night?

How do you keep them from getting too cold without overheating? How can you ensure they sleep
soundly and – ideally – you do too? At first glance, it might seem like a trivial question,
but in reality, there are endless answers. So, which one is the right one? It might not be
what you want to hear right now, but: it’s different for every family. Don't worry, though.
Baby sleep does have a few fundamental rules. By sticking to them, both your little one
and you will be in for a great night's rest.

One Layer Extra? How to Properly Dress a Baby for the Night

Most of the time, when we talk about dressing young children, you will come across the traditional advice: Dress them in what you are wearing, just one layer extra. While this advice is basically sound, it is too general and can sometimes cause more harm than good in practice. Just like adults, every child perceives temperature individually.

First and foremost, it is important to focus on the room temperature. Experts agree that the ideal temperature in a room where a child sleeps should range between 18 °C and 22 °C. Over time, you will learn to observe what temperature suits your baby best, and you can adjust the layering accordingly. However, it can be challenging at the beginning, which is why we have prepared clear tables with specific combinations at the end of this article for you to try.

Merino Will Take Care of the Right Temperature for You

If you are unsure when choosing clothing, merino wool is a safe bet. It can fully adapt to your child's needs and ensure optimal thermal comfort throughout the night. Wool from merino sheep has exceptional thermoregulatory properties – it warms beautifully in the cold and cools in the heat.

This material is highly breathable, quickly wicks body moisture away from the skin, and does not retain odors. When you dress your baby in merino pajamas and place them in a sleeping bag, there is no need to question whether they are too hot or too cold. As a mother, you can sleep peacefully, knowing they are safe and comfortable.

The Importance of Co-Sleeping and Close Contact

In our philosophy, we fully support co-sleeping. This approach strengthens a healthy bond between mother and child, creates a sense of security, and significantly eases night-time breastfeeding. Newborn babies, in particular, need our closeness – ideally through skin-to-skin contact.

Co-sleeping in practice: If you sleep with your baby in one bed, it is necessary to adjust their clothing accordingly. A mother in close proximity to her child naturally influences their breathing and body temperature. In this case, choose slightly fewer layers or opt for maximally breathable materials. However, using a merino sleeping bag in a shared bed is always a great choice, as it can effectively regulate excess heat.

To Swaddle or Not to Swaddle?

Tight swaddles of any kind are not an optimal choice for safe sleep. A child needs freedom of movement to naturally signal their needs and to allow the mother to respond in time. Furthermore, tight swaddling is among the factors that can negatively affect breastfeeding and carries risks associated with the baby potentially rolling over.

From an ergonomic and safety standpoint, the best and simplest combination is properly chosen pajamas and a sleeping bag. Nothing more is needed.

So, How to Dress a Baby for the Night?

The short answer is: pajamas and a sleeping bag. The more complex answer, however, always depends on the material, the current season, the room temperature, and the individual needs of your child. To make your decision easier, we have prepared the recommended combinations below:
